Why is it Important to Have Straight Teeth?

Having an attractive smile might not be the only reason you want to have straight teeth. Misaligned teeth can affect your overall well-being as much as it affects your oral health. Some of the health issues widely associated with misaligned teeth include:

  • Poor Dental Hygiene - It is hard to clean overcrowded teeth, which could result in gum disease and cavities.
  • Articulation Issues - Misaligned teeth may affect the way one produces sounds resulting in unclear speech.
  • Poor Digestion - When your teeth do not meet properly, you may not chew food adequately, causing poor digestion.
  • Headaches & Jaw Pain - Headaches result when the joints connecting your jaw become strained and sore.
  • Uneven Wear on Teeth – Misalignment causes unequal pressure on your teeth, leading to uneven wear and fractures.

Top 5 Benefits of Invisalign

  1. Invisible Design: Invisalign trays are made of virtually invisible plastic, making your smile appear natural throughout the straightening process.
  2. Convenience: The aligners are removable; you can continue to eat all kinds of food and brush and floss normally.
  3. Comfort: The smooth plastic aligner trays are comfortable to wear and easy to live with.
  4. Ease of Cleaning: The trays are easy to clean and maintain.
  5. Works Fast: Invisalign typically takes 12 to 18 months to achieve results.

How Invisalign Works

Image of young woman holding invisalign braces outdoorsTo start on the path to a straighter smile, Dr. Bonadeo will perform an oral health consultation to ensure you qualify for treatment. If you have signs of gum disease or tooth decay, you will need to have these issues treated first before you can start treatment.

Once Dr. Bonadeo decides Invisalign is a good fit for you, we begin the process by taking detailed impressions of your smile. Using our advanced cosmetic imaging, we print images of your final results to show you the new look of your smile once treatment is complete.

We then send your impressions to the lab. They will fabricate custom trays to fit your teeth comfortably at each stage of the realignment process. Our practice then receives the series of aligners required for your treatment from beginning to end.

You will need to switch trays every two weeks until the process is complete. The best part of the clear aligner system is that most people won’t even notice you’re straightening your teeth. To achieve results, you are required to commit to wearing each set for 22 hours each day. That’s why we offer Invisalign to adults and responsible teens.

We also recommend you download My Invisalign mobile app. When you take a smiling selfie that app will show you a picture of your modified teeth. It will show you what you can look like after the treatment is complete.

Which Issues Can Invisalign Fix?

Invisalign is excellent at fixing a myriad of dental problems depending on the severity of the problem, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gaps in between teeth
  • Crowded teeth

Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces

Both Invisalign and traditional metal braces work great at closing gaps and realigning crooked teeth. However, each treatment has its fair share of benefits and limitations.

Traditional Braces are permanently attached to your teeth for the entire duration of your treatment, so they work around the clock to improve your smile. However, the focus of traditional braces is more on improving overall function than aesthetics during treatment. Brackets and wires restrict your diet since crunchy foods may damage them. They are also hard to clean, which can result in decay if not thoroughly cleaned.

Invisalign is an effective option that allows you to straighten your teeth without anyone noticing and doesn’t restrict your diet. You can take them off, which helps you to clean your teeth thoroughly. On the other hand, the ability to easily remove Invisalign might create the temptation to take them off more often. If you don’t wear them for the recommended number of hours per day, you could easily undo the progress made.

Overall, metal braces are extremely effective at fixing complex dental issues such as one tooth sitting higher than the rest. Additionally, problems with back teeth can only be fixed using traditional braces. For patients who are conscious about their appearance, Invisalign provides a more invisible solution.
